Solving Multiple-Block Separable Convex Minimization Problems Using Two-Block Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers

چکیده
Abstract. In this paper, we consider solving multiple-block separable convex minimization problems using alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Motivated by the fact that the existing convergence theory for ADMM is mostly limited to the two-block case, we analyze in this paper, both theoretically and numerically, a new strategy that first transforms a multiblock problem into an equivalent two-block problem (either in the primal domain or in the dual domain) and then solves it using the standard two-block ADMM. In particular, we derive convergence results for this two-block ADMM approach to solve multi-block separable convex minimization problems, including an improved O(1/ǫ) iteration complexity result. Moreover, we compare the numerical efficiency of this approach with the standard multi-block ADMM on several separable convex minimization problems which include basis pursuit, robust principal component analysis and latent variable Gaussian graphical model selection. The numerical results show that the multiple-block ADMM, although lacks theoretical convergence guarantees, typically outperforms twoblock ADMMs.

On the Proximal Jacobian Decomposition of ALM for Multiple-Block Separable Convex Minimization Problems and Its Relationship to ADMM
The augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) is a benchmark for solving convex minimization problems with linear constraints. When the objective function of the model under consideration is representable as the sum of some functions without coupled variables, a Jacobian or Gauss-Seidel decomposition is often implemented to decompose the ALM subproblems so that the functions’ properties could be used m...
متن کاملOn the Convergence of Multi-Block Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers and Block Coordinate Descent Method
The paper answers several open questions of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and the block coordinate descent (BCD) method that are now wildly used to solve large scale convex optimization problems in many fields. For ADMM, it is still lack of theoretical understanding of the algorithm when the objective function is not separable across the variables. In this paper, we ana...
متن کاملBlock-wise Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers for Multiple-block Convex Programming and Beyond
The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is a benchmark for solving a linearly constrained convex minimization model with a two-block separable objective function; and it has been shown that its direct extension to a multiple-block case where the objective function is the sum of more than two functions is not necessarily convergent. For the multipleblock case, a natural idea is to...

Abstract. The augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) is fundamental for solving convex minimization models with linear constraints. When the objective function is separable such that it can be represented as the sum of more than one function without coupled variables, various splitting versions of the ALM have been well studied in the literature such as the alternating direction method of multiplier...
متن کاملIteration-Complexity of Block-Decomposition Algorithms and the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers
In this paper, we consider the monotone inclusion problem consisting of the sum of a continuous monotone map and a point-to-set maximal monotone operator with a separable two-block structure and introduce a framework of block-decomposition prox-type algorithms for solving it which allows for each one of the single-block proximal subproblems to be solved in an approximate sense. Moreover, by sho...
